Data Analyst, Provincial Health Services Authority

My career started as a Data Analyst at Cardiac Services BC, which is an agency under Provincial Health Services Authority. There, I provided statistical consulting to medical doctors and researchers, designed reports and dashboards to monitor the service quality of our provincial healthcare system, and created ad-hoc queries to support business decision making and presentations. In 2014, I published 2 abstracts in national medical conference proceedings.

Earlier this year, I was hired by Telus as a Senior Performance Analyst. This position is focused on achieving actionable insights with data and analytics, and requires the use of both statistical analysis software (SAS and R) and business intelligence tools such as Tableau. It is here I have obtained hands-on experience with transforming data into meaningful information and delivering information in a timely manner.

I have found that the training that I received while completing my B.Sc. in statistics at SFU prepared me well for my career. In my experience, the courses offered by the department are designed in such a way so as to satisfy the needs of both industry and academia. The department also provided me with an educational co-op opportunity. I was a co-op student at the UBC James Hogg Medical Research Center for two semesters and gained hands-on experience in SAS programming and data manipulation.

I really enjoyed my time at SFU and would like to thank to the professors and staff members from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science for always being available and willing to help.
