X=interval or ratio variable, Y=nominal or ordinal variable

An exampe of this type of relationship is the relationship between the amount smoked (packs/day - the ratio scaled X variable) and if a patient develops lung cancer (yes or no - the nominal scaled Y variable). This requires quite advanced statistics training to understand what is going on and is not covered in this course.
