I am currently a second year master’s student in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at SFU. I completed my undergraduate degree in statistics here at SFU in 2014 and then went right into graduate school. My undergraduate coursework in the department prepared me very well for the more rigorous demands of graduate school. The numerous research opportunities that I received also helped prepare me for the transition from courses to thesis work.
I was also fortunate during my undergraduate degree to be able to TA for several semesters. Teaching the introductory and service courses in the workshop was a great opportunity to meet other statistics students and to ensure that my foundational knowledge was solid. After a few semesters in the workshop, I had the opportunity to mark for the statistical communication course, which was a great experience and improved my own ability to write and to edit writing.
My plan after completing my master’s degree is to move on to a Ph.D. I hope one day to teach statistics at a university somewhere.
