Even now, over 2 years after my graduation, I still feel very fortunate that I was a student in the SFU graduate program in actuarial science.
The program provided me with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in my life and career. The SFU program also offered me the co-op opportunity to work for Pacific Blue Cross which later lead to a full time position. In addition, the kindness with which all people in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science treated me is something I will never forget.
Pacific Blue Cross has been BC's leading benefits provider for over 70 years. Together with BC Life, Pacific Blue Cross provides health, dental, life, disability and travel coverage through individual and employee group plans.
My responsibilities include premium calculation, data preparation, analysis of cost trends, supporting clients' and internal requests, assistance with product pricing, performing reserves and business evaluations, assisting in large case underwriting and providing support in the evaluation of reinsurance treaties, etc. I've found my work to be both very interesting and challenging. Because of the role of my department in the company, I often work with senior management directly. Cooperating and communicating with other departments are also part of my daily job. This provides a great opportunity to look at the tasks I'm doing from different perspectives.
