From Theft To Brain Food... How The Wonderfully Wide World of Statistics Can Answer Your Questions.
Have you ever stolen something from a store? If so, would you tell the truth if someone asked you that question? Maybe not! In the first part of this workshop, we learn a trick for obtaining honest responses to a sensitive question. Elementary probability theory will then allow us to answer to that question. In the second part of the workshop, we engage in some interactive data collection -- and some role play! -- to determine whether "brain food" can improve performance on a math exam. We will see that our conclusions depend heavily on how we collect and analyze our data.
The last half hour of the workshop will be spent discussing career options, licence exams, and professional associations.
This 1.5 hour workshop is suitable for students from Grades 8 to 10. Workshops take place in the Trottier Studio for Innovative Science Education at the Burnaby campus. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to register your class.
