Jean-François Bégin named a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries

Jean-François Bégin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, was recently named a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA). The FSA is the highest designation offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and requires about eight exams, some online courses and modules, validation of educational experiences, a professionalism seminar, and the Fellowship Admissions Course. Jean-François passed all the fellowship exams on his first attempt during his doctoral studies at HEC Montréal, before joining SFU.

Jean-François was granted his fellowship at the FAC in Braselton, Georgia, where he also attended lectures on professional ethics, malpractice issues and oral communications. As of December 31, 2015, SOA membership consisted of 16,222 Fellows.

The department is very proud of Jean-François' accomplishment. His FSA status further strengthens our position as Western Canada's only Centre of Actuarial Excellence (CAE) as recognized by the SOA. The CAE program allows universities and colleges with outstanding actuarial programs the opportunity to be recognized for that achievement and to compete for grants for education and research.
