Subject: [d-ssc] Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award Opportunity

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award Opportunity (.pdf available at www.ualberta.ca/~rhondar)

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral opportunity in biostatistics. The successful applicant will be involved in the development of statistical methodology and analysis of data sets with existing and new methods. Work will focus on diagnostic medicine studies (ie, studies involving medical diagnostic test data) or spatial statistics using administrative data sources, depending on the interests of the candidate.

The work will be conducted in the biostatistical laboratory of Prof. Rhonda Rosychuk in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. The primary responsibilities are to: assist in the development of biostatistical methodology to address problems, conduct literature searches and reviews, develop computer code to implement new methodology and answer biostatistical research questions, perform statistical analyses using existing and new methods on data sets, and aid in the preparation of biostatistical and medical presentations and manuscripts.

Qualified applicants should have: nearly completed PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics (or completed), excellent oral and written communication skills, and exceptional computing skills on Unix/Linux/Windows platforms with software packages such as Splus. Ability to program in C/C++ is an asset. Applicants are invited to contact Prof. Rosychuk for additional information.

The post-doctoral position is contingent on funding from post-doctoral awards through either the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) or the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). AHFMR supports post-doctoral training in health research related fields through Heritage Full-Time Fellowships of up to 3 years. A full description of the eligibility and instructions can be found on the AHFMR website (http://www.ahfmr.ab.ca/grants/FT-fellow.php).  CIHR has a similar opportunity and a full description of the eligibility and instructions can be found on the CIHR website (http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?prog=775&&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&resultCount=25&sort=program&all=1&masterList=true). These are highly competitive awards and biostatisticians meeting the eligibility criteria are encouraged to carefully review the instructions and applications. Prof. Rosychuk has a track record of successfully obtaining funding from AHFMR and CIHR.

To facilitate the applications to AHFMR and CIHR in October 2009, interested candidates are asked to provide by mail or e-mail: (1) letter of interest, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) graduate courses taken and grades obtained, and (4) the names and contact information of three references by August 10, 2009, to the address below. Applications received after that date may not receive full consideration.
